Formatting a Document

Readability & Legibility

The main purpose of formatting is to increase readability and legibility.

How easy is it to read text–especially in long sentences and paragraph form–is called readability. A Serif font , such as Times New Roman, increases readability but decreases legibility.

How easy it is to distinguish between letters is called legibility. Sans Serf fonts like Arial increases legibility but decreases readability. Titles and Sub Titles are normally short, and therefore readability is not as important as legibility. Hence, they are written in a Sans Serif font to increase legibility. all caps increases legibility but decreases readability. Street signs are normally in all caps (e.g. a STOP sign).
